Home Homework Help How to Manage Musculoskeletal and Neurological/Psychological Disorders Using Emerging Therapies

Musculoskeletal and neurological/psychological disorders which affect the musculoskeletal and nervous systems cause a lot of discomfort, limited mobility, and possibly psychological problems. The improvements in the therapeutic interventions present several possibilities of better management of these disorders. In this article, the author focuses on new approaches that are revolutionizing the approach to rehabilitation and mental health.

Electroceuticals: Revolutionizing Neurological and Psychiatric Treatment

Electroceuticals are considered as a revolutionary way of managing neurological and psychiatric diseases. These therapies employ electrical stimulation to alter the activity of the neural tissues and are beneficial to patients who have not responded to other treatment methods.

DBS has applied to treat extreme conditions of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). DBS works through the implantation of electrodes that change the neural circuits that are not functioning properly. Some patients have benefitted immensely from it but it involves risks of any brain surgery and has to be maintained frequently.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a painless procedure that involves the use of magnets to activate the nerve cells in the brain. It is most useful for the patients with depression who have not shown any improvement with medication. It has been established in recent trials that TMS can result in full remission in certain patients, especially when treated with the help of imaging brain scans.

Focused Ultrasound is a relatively new technique that has been developed to treat the targeted areas of the brain without the need for surgery. It has been found to be effective in conditions such as OCD and depression and has the benefit of being less invasive than surgery.

Virtual Reality: Enhancing Rehabilitation and Mental Health

Virtual Reality (VR) is now becoming popular in the rehabilitation of physical and mental disorders. In this case, VR can be used to offer therapy in new forms because it can produce environments.

In musculoskeletal rehabilitation, VR-based telerehabilitation enables the patient to execute exercises through virtual reality environment. Besides, it also helps in improving patient involvement, which is always a good thing as far as adherence and results are concerned.

In stroke and Parkinson’s disease, VR interventions have been used successfully in the treatment of motor dysfunctions and balance. One of the advantages of using VR therapy is that patients who go through the therapy sessions have noted enhanced mobility and reduced chances of falling.

In the field of mental health, VR has been applied to treat such conditions as stress, anxiety, and depression. In this way, VR therapy helps to decrease the level of negative emotions and enhance the quality of life in patients.

Aquatic Therapy: A Holistic Approach to Physical Rehabilitation

Aquatic therapy entails undertaking exercises within water and taking advantage of water in the process of therapy. Water supports the body weight and thus it is a perfect environment to support patients with musculoskeletal problems.

In other words, aquatic therapy is useful to the patients with osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and lower back pain in that it can reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve quality of life. The water also offers resistance to the body thus helping in building up of muscles without causing much pressure to the bones as is the case with most of the land exercises.

Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis are some of the neurological disorders that benefit from the benefits of balance and coordination that comes with aquatic therapy. This environment minimizes the patient’s concern of falling and thus increases the chances of participation in the exercises.

Thus, the use of electroceuticals, virtual reality, and aquatic therapy in treatment is effective in managing musculoskeletal and neurological/psychological disorders. These therapies not only focus on the physiological approach of the treatment but also the psychological one, thus opening new doors for a more efficient treatment of patients.
